Devastating earthquake in South-Eastern Turkey; A statement from IDA, the Turkish PR association
A statement from IDA, the Turkish PR association. Please support however you can:
In the early morning hours of February 6th , South-Eastern Turkey was hit by an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude, the most severe earthquake recorded in the country in nearly a hundred years. Only 9 hours later, at midday, another earthquake of equally severe magnitude (7.6) took place in the same region. A total of 10 provinces were heavily affected with direct impact on the lives of 13.5 million people. Many cities and towns were completely destroyed. Today, the death toll has already risen to over 41,000, and more than 100,000 people are injured.
The situation in the area is devastating. In addition to the thousands of buildings that have collapsed, major portions of the structures in this vast area are considered unsafe. Millions of people, including over 4 million children, have been left without homes in a region currently experiencing harsh winter conditions. These people are currently in need of all the help they can get.
The destruction caused by the earthquakes have impacted communication and transportation infrastructures severely, leaving many areas outside the reach of early rescue efforts.
In a great display of unity, rescue teams with expertise have arrived to the region from all over the world. While miracles are still taking place with people being rescued from under rubbles after 200 hours, the region is in need of even more support today with so many displaced people without shelter.
It will take a considerable amount of time and effort for these people, who have lost their families and homes, to recover from this disaster.
